Boat Tour on Tennessee River gorge from Chattanooga

Boat Tour on Tennessee River gorge from Chattanooga

Scope out all of the diverse wildlife and beautiful scenery along the Tennessee River on this 3.5-hour tour aboard a 70-foot luxury cruiser.

Your naturalist tour guide will discuss the Native Americans' early navigation of the Tennessee River gorge and detail the wildlife you encounter. The cruise is conducted at a slow, relaxed pace and with on-board binoculars to allow you to take in views of all the wildlife in their natural habitat.

Enjoy the breath-taking beauty of the 27,000 acre canyon carved out by 26 miles of the Tennessee River over thousands of years. It is the fourth largest river canyon east of the Mississippi and the only large river canyon bordering a mid-size city. The diverse landscape of the gorge provides habitats for more than 1,000 varieties of plants, ferns, trees, grasses and flowers as well as a rich wildlife population. Nearly 200 different species of birds inhabit "Tennessee's Grand Canyon."

Tour Highlights
~ The cruise will pause so you can watch great blue herons tending their nests, raccoons rambling along the riverbank, hawks and eagles soaring along the canyon rim and belted kingfishers defending their territory.
~ See the home of the Cherokee Indian, Maker of Thunder. His home is in the heart of the gorge at Untiguhi, or Pot in Water, one of 66 known sacred Cherokee Indian sites within the canyon.
~ Relive Native American stories at the whirlpool, or The Suck. Archaeological evidence along the cruise route tells the stories of various Native American cultures contained within the river valley for over 10,000 years.
~ Cruise in the wake of the early pioneers. The "Narrows" was one of the most harrowing obstacles on their westward journey. They had to overcome rapids, shoals, whirlpools and the formidable Chickamaugas, who defended the canyon until the death of their chief, Dragging Canoe.
~ Pause and reflect in remembrance of those who perished on the Trail of Tears. The Cherokees and other Native American tribes were forcibly removed from their land in the 1830's and moved to reservations in the West. This exodus began at Ross's Landing and the Tennessee River gorge was the primary water route for the exiles.
~ Pay tribute to the soldiers who fought for Chattanooga at Lookout Mountain, Moccasin Bend, Brown's Ferry, Kelly's Ferry, William's Island, the Haley Trace and Signal Point, all of which were significant sites during the Civil War.
~ Locate wild turkey, deer, squirrels, beavers and other wildlife in the Prentice Cooper Wildlife Management Area. You can even shoot them.....with your camera.
